Relative Surviving Coin Distribution by Denomination

ComNumbers

Some Notes -

These graphs are based on English Silver Coinage rarity data which has been translated into maximum numbers using the following graph -

ComNumbers3

Using the first and latest editions of ESC and the above graph, the relative coin distribution tables were put together.

The number of recognised varieties is quite different for the first and last editions of ESC. Clearly the number of coins in collections has stayed constant so there has been a shift in the numbers related to the new varieties which have come to be known. Most of the new varieties are seen as rare specimens so the total number has really not changed significantly, just the distribution of coin denominations.

The Circulation Vs Rarity graph if taken literally would suggest that there are possibly between 2,000 and 10,000, 1653 Commonwealth Crowns in existence. The likelihood is that the real number lies very much at the lower end of 2,000 or less pieces rather than the upper end of 10,000 pieces. That being the case one should forget absolute numbers and think in terms of relative numbers.
