The “Cromwell” Silver Crown of 1658

Close-up view of the obverse die used to produce this coin.

The characteristic die crack of this issue - seen here as a dark line across the bottom of Cromwell’s neck - appeared as production progressed and deteriorated with use till this die was abandoned. In the end the crack was seen from edge to edge. Early production had a barely discernable flaw but this became more pronounced as shown below.
